SAINT-SAËNS Oboe Sonata (11′)
JÁNAČEK Violin Sonata (17′)
BRAHMS Cello Sonata in F (28′)
MARTINŮ Oboe Quartet (12′)

Ensemble 360 returns with a kaleidoscopic programme. We open with Saint-Saëns’ contemplative and conversational duo for oboe and piano, marking the centenary of the composer’s death, which ripples with the rich, evocative contrasting sounds of this instrumental pairing.

Jánaček’s high-wire act of a violin sonata is delicately chromatic, monumental in scope and shot through with a wistful melancholy. Brahms’s cello sonata is a work of brooding intensity that works through fire and storm to its glowing conclusion. By turns angular and lyrical, Martinů’s dense quartet brings together all four instruments for a thrilling finale to this showcase of chamber music.

SCHUMANN Adagio and Allegro (9’)
SCHUMANN Three Romances Op.94 (13’)
REINECKE Trio for Oboe, Horn & Piano (26’)

Schumann’s Three Romances are a haunting tour through the gorgeous sonority of the oboe, paired here with his ground-breaking Adagio and Allegro, a virtuosic display that exploits the musical agility, heights and depths of the newly-created valved horn. Reinecke’s beautifully balanced three-way conversation between piano, oboe and horn is a sumptuous delight, turning through soulful melody, stormy intensity and a bright, witty conclusion.

Recorded at Emmanuel Church in Barnsley.

BRITTEN Prologue from Serenade for Tenor, Horn and Strings (1’)
POULENC Oboe Sonata (15’)
BRITTEN Temporal Variations (14’)
POULENC Elégie for Horn & Piano (9’)

These works for oboe, horn and piano stage a conversation across the channel between two innovative voices of the twentieth century. Britten’s Serenade was written for the virtuoso horn player Dennis Brain, whose untimely death is the tragic subject of Poulenc’s Elégie, a majestically soulful piece. Britten’s Temporal Variations brilliantly show off the range and colour of the oboe, and contrast with the languid opening of Poulenc’s Oboe Sonata, which sets the tone for his last great work: a meditation on mortality and music.

Recorded in Emmanuel Church, Barnsley.
